This last Saturday, April 19th, I attended the Chico Eco Fest. It was a beautiful day and a great day to walk around on campus. I was grateful that one of my roommates wanted to go with me. We walked from our apartment a half mile from campus. When we got there around one O’clock there were about five hundred people there. We agreed that we thought the Eco Fest would be larger. It was your typical earth day fair. There were stands with various knick knacks like jewelry, tie dye shirts, and organic food. They whole time there were different bands playing “earthy” music.
There was one aspect of the Eco Fest that I found very interesting. There were tables with Tri-folds on them. The tri-folds were projects made by Chico students. The reports covered what Chico is doing to become more environmentally friendly. Some reports covered what other Universities in California are doing to help mother earth out. It was cool to see.
One thing that disappointed me was the Chico State student turnout. It didn’t seem like there were many students there, just hippies. I wonder why people who care about the earth always have to have dreads and a lot of facial hair. It’s just weird that more people don’t care. I mean do you have to smoke copious amounts of marijuana to give a damn? I was also disappointed that they didn’t have any juice. This may seem weird but for some reason I was expecting juice and when there wasn’t any it was a huge let down. Overall I thought the Eco Fest was a good idea but a let down. For how environmentally conscious Chico claims to be we should be able to pull off something way better.

I too attended the Eco-Fest with plans of writing about it. I didn't find much but the tri-folds and a bunch of people sitting on the grass listening to the bands. If I could have found someone to talk to, I would have asked questions. It felt very exclusive and I certainly was not dressed as those in the event. :)
